Adrien Tirtiaux’s practice reflects on the possibilities of architecture and architectural intervention.

A tort ou horizon is part of the series of works Charleroi is on my mind (2010-2013), which consists of personal reflections about this city’s urban structure and development possibilities. The series emerged in parallel with the initiative HOTEL CHARLEROI, founded by Tirtiaux in 2009 together with Antoine Turillon and Hannes Zebedin, which organised artist residencies and exhibitions in the post-industrial landscape of Charleroi.

A tort ou horizon depicts a longitudinal cross-section through the “petit ring” surrounding Charleroi‘s city centre, designed by Jean Yernaux in the seventies. Built on a viaduct in the lower part of the town and buried on the heights, the ring acts as a horizon levelling the landscape and people’s desires. Resituating this configuration here in Antwerp, the installation transplants one place in order to imagine another.
