The City Collection: IN/SIGHT
Cindy Wright (°1972, Herentals) often starts from her own photography. In her studio she makes compositions, which she photographs and edits digitally, and which then serve as the base for photo-realistic drawings and paintings. Wright is drawn to what is usually seen as repulsive. Unification is an overlapping, of the ten charcoal drawings of skulls. Tackling themes such as decay, transience and vulnerability, the skull drawings are reminiscent of the seventeenth-century vanitas painting tradition in Europe. They encourage reflection and introspection. Everyone is an individual, but in death we are all connected, regardless of gender, skin colour, culture, religion or status.
