The City Collection: IN/SIGHT
Terre & Visages, 2015-2020
Drawing on history as his main source of inspiration, Guy Woueté (b. 1980, Douala, Cameroon) wants to shape a new future in which we can see and understand each other in different ways. With his video works, drawings, paintings and installations, he hopes to trigger thought processes on social issues and migration in our globalised world. Terre & Visages, a series of ten self-portraits, explores the iconography and stereotypes that emerged in the wake of the ‘civilising missions’ as a cultural justification for colonisation. Woueté wonders how to portray himself, given that any representation is imbued with the coloniser’s gaze and, consequently, power.
